Building Department
The Building Department is responsible for administering and enforcing the Massachusetts State Codes relative to building, sheet metal, plumbing, gas and electrical work. This includes enforcement of the Massachusetts Architectural Access regulations. Additionally, the Department administers and enforces the Town’s Zoning Bylaws and Massachusetts Zoning codes. Inspectional services are provided to help ensure that individual disciplines are adhering to their respective codes. The Department also enforces Fire Regulations and requirements under the Massachusetts Architectural Access Board (AAB) the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance. As the Zoning Enforcement Officer, the Building Commissioner investigates zoning complaints and makes determinations. This office works collectively with the Town Planner to improve/review zoning and advise the Planning Board.
The Department reviews all permit applications and inspects all new construction, renovations, alterations and remodels. It is also responsible for performing annual inspections for day cares, restaurants, churches, schools, and other places of public assembly. Inspections include coordination with other permitting departments.
