Why does the fire engine respond to medical emergency calls?

The fire department units are dispatched based on the potential severity of the call. Often the fire engine crew responds to assists the ambulance with things like lifting and moving patients as well as providing additional support and patient care. They will also respond to provide a safe area for the ambulance crew to work depending on the location of the call.
